Commercial Fence Installation for DC-Metro Businesses
Commercial fence work in the DC metro rarely stops at a property line and a gate. You are working around active operations, security protocols, and often a compliance officer who needs documentation before a single post goes in the ground.
That is the work we do every day. As a commercial fence company across the DC metro, Hurricane Fence serves general contractors bidding out site packages, property managers securing multi-tenant buildings, facility teams at government campuses, and operators of the data centers concentrated across the Northern Virginia corridor. Client names and locations stay confidential under NDA, but the project types are consistent: perimeter security, access-controlled entries, equipment screening, and crash-rated barriers.
You get one contractor accountable for the whole scope, from the first site walk-through to final gate testing. Start with our Northern Virginia commercial fence company to see how we structure larger commercial engagements.

High-Security & Crash-Rated Fence Systems

Some sites need a fence that stops a vehicle, not just an intruder. This is where three decades of security fence work sets Hurricane Fence apart.
We design and install high-security fencing rated to stop hostile vehicles: K-Rated systems (K4 through K12) and M-Rated systems (M30 through M50), engineered to the threat level your site faces. Our crews build to ATFP (Anti-Terrorism Force Protection) requirements and to DoD, DOS, and ASTM standards, which is the documentation trail federal and defense projects demand before work starts.
Over 30 years, we have delivered perimeter security fence systems for military installations, government facilities, and mission-critical data centers across the eastern US. We cannot name them, but we can build to their specs. If your project involves a security review, bring us in during design, not after.
Call our commercial team at (571) 369-3006 to walk through your security requirements.

In-House Commercial Gates & Access Control
A perimeter fence is only as secure as its entry points. Most fence companies subcontract gate automation to a third party, which means two vendors, two schedules, and a finger-pointing problem when something fails.
Hurricane Fence is the only fence company in Virginia with a dedicated in-house gate operator division. Our team is an IDEA-Certified Automated Gate Systems Designer with CAGOI- and CGAD-certified installers. We build the fence, hang the gate, install the operator, and integrate the access control, all under one roof, so one company owns the result. For the full scope of commercial gate installation and access control integration, see our commercial gates and access control work.
Fence Permits & Zoning in Fairfax County
Most commercial fence surprises come from the paperwork, not the install. Here is what to know before you dig in Fairfax County.
Height limits: Under Fairfax County code, fences are limited to 4 feet in most front yards and up to 7 feet in side and rear yards. A lot that abuts a major thoroughfare may qualify for greater height. Location and height are governed by Zoning Ordinance § 4102.7.A(7).
Permits: Most fences do not require a building permit in Fairfax County. Fences serving as swimming pool barriers are the common exception. Commercial site plans can carry their own review requirements, so confirm the trigger for your project.
Applications run through the county’s PLUS online portal. For permit questions, Fairfax County Land Development Services is at 12055 Government Center Pkwy, Fairfax, VA 22035, 703-222-0801. Zoning enforcement is a separate office (Code Compliance, 703-324-1300), so call the right one. Current permit fees and processing times are best confirmed directly with Land Development Services.
Utility marking: We place the Virginia 811 locate request on your behalf, with at least 3 working days’ notice before we excavate. Note that Virginia 811 marks public utilities only and does not locate private lines running from a meter to a building.
Foundation depth:Virginia Residential Code § R403.1.4.1 requires permanent supports to be protected from frost. We set commercial posts to the depth the code and soil conditions call for on your site.
We help prepare the required permit documentation, but the property owner submits it and is responsible for submission.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for a commercial fence in Fairfax County?
Most fences in Fairfax County do not require a building permit, with pool-barrier fences as the common exception. Commercial site plans can carry their own review requirements, so the trigger depends on your project. Height rules still apply regardless of permit status, and we help prepare the documentation you do need.
How tall can a commercial fence be in Northern Virginia?
In Fairfax County, fences are limited to 4 feet in most front yards and up to 7 feet in side and rear yards. Lots abutting a major thoroughfare may qualify for more height. Other jurisdictions in the metro set their own limits, so we confirm the rule for your specific address.
Does Hurricane Fence handle high-security and crash-rated fencing?
Yes. We design and install K-Rated systems (K4 through K12) and M-Rated systems (M30 through M50), built to ATFP, DoD, DOS, and ASTM standards. This is a core part of our commercial work for military, government, and data center sites.
Who calls Virginia 811 for the project?
We do. Hurricane Fence places the Virginia 811 locate request on your behalf, with at least 3 working days’ notice before excavation. Keep in mind that 811 marks public utilities only, so private lines between a meter and a building need separate locating.
Does Hurricane install and automate commercial gates, or subcontract it?
We do it in-house. Hurricane Fence is the only fence company in Virginia with a dedicated gate operator division, IDEA Certified and staffed with CAGOI and CGAD certified installers. One company handles the fence, the gate, the operator, and the access control.
How long does commercial fence installation take in Northern Virginia?
It depends on scope. A straightforward chain link or ornamental perimeter job can often move from site walk to installed fence in a matter of weeks. A project that adds crash-rated systems, integrated access control, or a formal security review, or one that runs into permitting, HOA/architectural review, or long-lead materials, takes longer. Once we’ve walked your site, we give you a specific schedule as part of the written scope, not a placeholder range.
