WHY HURRICANE FENCE
Residential Fencing Across Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Portsmouth
Your fence installation should account for where you live, not just what you want the fence to look like. Hampton Roads includes Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth, and each market brings different property layouts, regulations, and coastal conditions.
Norfolk
Established neighborhoods often have tighter lots, so property lines, gate swing, and drainage need to be considered before installation. Norfolk also has its own front-yard height and openness rules, so we confirm the current requirement with the city. See our fence installation in Norfolk page for local details.
Virginia Beach
The city requires a fence permit when the fence sits within 30 feet of a public right-of-way. Interior lots that stay 30-plus feet back, under 4 feet in front and 8 feet elsewhere, often skip the permit. Our team can help you understand what applies to your property. See our Virginia Beach fencing page.
Chesapeake
Properties near inlets and drainage channels need a fence that can handle the surrounding conditions. We often recommend aluminum for homeowners who want an ornamental appearance without steel’s rust concerns. Chesapeake also has its own height and setback limits. See Chesapeake fence installation.
Portsmouth
Our Portsmouth office at 3530 Airline Boulevard anchors our Hampton Roads service area. For properties exposed to coastal conditions, we recommend materials based on the location and intended use. For wood fencing, that means cedar rather than pressure-treated pine. See our Portsmouth fence company page.
OUR PRODUCTS
Choose a Fence That Fits Your Hampton Roads Property
The right material can make a major difference in maintenance, appearance, and long-term performance. That is why we help homeowners choose based on the property type.
Vinyl Fencing
Vinyl fence installation is also the most requested material we install across the metro. Salt air does not corrode vinyl, and it requires no painting, staining, or re-sealing. For homeowners who want a clean appearance without regular maintenance, vinyl is an excellent fit.
Aluminum Fencing
For properties near Lake Smith, the Lafayette River, or the Chesapeake inlets, installing aluminum fencing provides the ornamental look many homeowners want without the rust concerns associated with steel. Every panel is built to meet pool-barrier code.
Wood Fencing
We install cedar for homeowners who want warmth and character in their yard. Cedar handles moisture better than pine, but coastal properties typically require re-staining every two to three years.

Privacy, Pet Safety, Child Safety, and Curb Appeal
A fence should solve a problem, not simply fill a property line.
Maybe you need to keep your dog safely in the yard. Perhaps you want a private backyard where you can relax without looking directly into the neighbor’s property. You may also need a secure area for children or an attractive front-yard fence that works with your home’s style and HOA requirements.
Whatever your reason for installing a fence, we help you choose the material and height around that goal. During your free walkthrough, we look at the property and discuss the options that make the most sense for your home.

Fence Permits and HOA Approval in Hampton Roads

Once you have an idea of the fence you want, the next step is making sure you can build it where you plan to. Permit requirements vary throughout Hampton Roads, so we confirm the applicable city requirements rather than leaving you to figure them out on your own.
In Virginia Beach, a fence permit is required when the fence sits within 30 feet of a public right-of-way. The fee is $61, and fence permits do not require inspections.
Interior lots that stay 30 feet or more from the right-of-way, no taller than 4 feet in the front yard and 8 feet elsewhere, generally do not need a permit. Section 201 of the Virginia Beach City Zoning Ordinance governs height, location, and planting rules. Pool barriers need a building permit and a minimum height of 4 feet.
Before anyone digs, the law requires a Miss Utility locate. Contact Virginia 811 at (800) 552-7001 at least three business days ahead so underground lines can be marked. We handle that call for you on every job.
Permit rules in Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth differ from Virginia Beach, and we confirm the current requirement with each city. If your community has an HOA, we can also help prepare the approval documentation at the estimate stage. Our 8-step fence preparation guide can help you prepare for installation.
A Fence Installation Process Built Around Your Property
Good fence installation starts before the first post goes into the ground. That is why we provide a free, in-person walkthrough instead of trying to price your project over the phone.
A Hurricane Fence salesperson comes to your home, measures the fence runs, checks grade changes and drainage, and discusses your material and gate options. You receive a written estimate and timeline after we have seen the actual property.
Once you approve the project, we place the Miss Utility call and prepare any required permit or HOA paperwork. Posts are set 30 to 36 inches deep in concrete, which cures for 5 to 10 days before panels are hung. That attention to installation details helps us build fences that are made for the property rather than simply installed on it.
