Post holes are dug 30 to 36 inches deep and set in concrete. In Henrico and Chesterfield’s clay-heavy ground, we use bell-bottom footings rather than straight-wall holes, because clay soil grips a straight-wall post when it expands in wet conditions and lifts it slowly out of the ground through repeated freeze-thaw cycles. The bell shape gives the soil nowhere to push against, and the post stays plumb season after season. Concrete then cures for 5 to 10 business days before we attach rails and pickets.

Gate posts receive extra concrete and, in most cases, a heavier post than the line posts — typically a 4-inch-square post in place of the 2.5-inch standard — so the gate swings true for years instead of sagging at the latch after the first summer.
