Post depth and concrete footings
Posts go in at 30–36 inches below grade on every residential install. Because Richmond’s clay holds moisture against straight-wall post holes and creates lateral pressure, we form bell-bottom footings rather than straight cylindrical holes. The bell shape gives the concrete a wider base that the surrounding clay can’t grip and heave. A post at 32 inches in a bell footing doesn’t move.

After posts are set, we wait 5–10 business days before pulling the chain link fabric tight. This gives the concrete time to cure properly so the fence line stays stable under tension.
