OUR PRODUCTS
Residential Fencing We Install Across the Richmond Area
Picking the right material is the first real decision. Each one holds up differently in Richmond weather, needs a different amount of upkeep, and carries a different price. Here is a quick map of your options.
Vinyl Fencing
Vinyl is the material we recommend most often. It does not warp, crack, or rot, and it never needs painting or sealing. See our vinyl fence installation options for privacy, semi-privacy, and picket styles.
Aluminum Fencing
For the wrought-iron look without the maintenance, aluminum is the answer. It is low-maintenance and clears HOA review more easily than most options. Explore our aluminum fencing in flat-top and spear-top styles.
Wood Fencing
Wood gives a home warmth and character that other materials cannot match, and cedar holds up well against rot and insects here. It does need periodic sealing. See our wood fence installation in board-on-board and stockade.
Chain Link Fencing
Practical, durable, and nearly maintenance-free, chain link keeps kids and dogs visible while it contains them. Galvanized resists rust, while vinyl-coated adds color. See our chain link fencing.

Gates and Automatic Operators
We are the only fence company in Virginia with an in-house gate operator division, IDEA Certified, so your swing gate, sliding gate, or automatic gate operators come from the same team that builds the fence.
Fence Permits and HOA Approval in the City of Richmond
Most homeowners are surprised by how simple the city rules are, and how much stricter an HOA can be by comparison. Here is what actually applies in the City of Richmond.
Permit required: No building permit for a fence, unless it serves as a swimming pool barrier, per the City of Richmond Planning & Development Review FAQ.
Height limits: Front yard 4 feet · rear and side yards 6.5 feet · posts, columns, or gates may add up to 1.5 feet, under the same city guidance.
Not allowed: Electrified fences and barbed or razor wire are prohibited in residential areas.
Historic districts: If your home sits in one of Richmond’s Old & Historic Districts, a fence needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Commission of Architectural Review before work begins.
County rules differ. Fence height and permit thresholds in Henrico and Chesterfield are set by each county and are worth confirming for your address. When an HOA requires approval, we help prepare the documentation you submit for review.
Building for Central Virginia Clay Soil and Climate

Richmond sits on heavy clay that packs down hard and drains poorly, as documented in local reporting on the area’s soil. Clay grips a post well, but it also swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which is exactly what pushes a poorly set post out of line over a few seasons.
The regional frost line runs about 18 inches deep, per Henrico County’s building design criteria. Set a post shallower than that and winter frost can lift it. We set posts well below the frost line and anchor them in concrete so your fence line stays straight through the freeze-and-thaw cycles.
Before any digging, we place the Virginia 811 locate request at least three working days ahead, so gas, water, and electric lines are marked and nobody hits a surprise.

WHERE WE SERVE
Richmond-Area Neighborhoods and Communities We Serve
Our fence installers in Richmond, VA work across the city and the surrounding counties, and the details change from one area to the next.
- Church Hill and Monument Avenue: These city Old & Historic Districts require a Certificate of Appropriateness before a fence goes in, and we help prepare that submission.
- Henrico County lots: Posts are set below the county’s 18-inch frost line so winter heave does not throw the line off.
- Midlothian and Chesterfield subdivisions: Newer communities here often run HOA design review, and we prep the paperwork for approval.
- City of Richmond lots: The 4-foot front-yard height limit shapes what we can build street-side, so we plan the layout around it from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Residential Fencing in Virginia — Common Questions
Do I need a permit for a fence in Richmond, VA?
In the City of Richmond, a fence does not require a building permit unless it serves as a swimming pool barrier. Front-yard fences top out at 4 feet, rear and side yards at 6.5 feet, with posts and gates allowed up to 1.5 feet higher. County rules differ, so we confirm the requirements for your address during the estimate.
How much does fence installation cost in Richmond?
Cost depends on the material, the length of the fence, your terrain, and how many gates you need. A short chain link run and a long vinyl privacy fence are very different projects. Because every yard is different, we quote in person after walking the property rather than giving a number over the phone.
How long does residential fence installation take?
Most residential fence installations are completed in one to two days, depending on the size of the yard and the material selected. Larger properties or projects with significant grading and terrain challenges may take longer. We’ll give you a realistic project timeline during your estimate so you know exactly what to expect.
How deep should fence posts be set in Richmond’s clay soil?
Below the regional 18-inch frost line, anchored in concrete. Richmond’s heavy clay swells and shrinks with moisture, causing shallow posts to shift out of alignment over time. Setting posts deep and in concrete keeps the fence straight through the seasons.
Does Hurricane Fence handle the Miss Utility call?
Yes, we place the Virginia 811 locate request for you. State rules require the call at least three working days before digging, so lines are marked before we set a single post. You do not have to coordinate any of it.
How do I prepare for my fence installation?
Confirm your property lines, clear the fence line, and gather any HOA paperwork. Our guide, 8 steps to prepare for your fence installation, walks through the rest so install day goes smoothly.
