Commercial Fence Company Serving Raleigh, Durham, and the Research Triangle
Our Dunn office puts us in the middle of the corridor, with a commercial reach spanning the Triangle and extending roughly halfway toward Charlotte.
We work with facility teams and general contractors throughout the region. In Raleigh, that includes perimeter and enclosure work for Wake County industrial parks and distribution sites. Around Research Triangle Park and Durham, we build for technology and research employers that need controlled site access, not simply a property line. In Chapel Hill much of the work is institutional, where fencing must clear zoning review before installation begins. Cary’s newer commercial developments round out the corridor.
As a commercial fence company in Raleigh, we handle the site logistics and zoning reviews associated with Wake County’s industrial and distribution work. In Durham, we do the same for Research Triangle Park campuses and the technology and research employers based there, plus the permit paperwork and utility coordination either market requires.

Security Fencing Built for High-Risk Sites

Some facilities need more protection than a standard chain link fence can provide. A substation, data operations building, or storage yard holding six figures of equipment needs a perimeter designed to slow an intruder down and give your team time to respond.
That is the type of work Hurricane Fence has handled for more than 30 years. Virginia has long been a hub for high-security fencing, and we have built security fencing Richmond, VA facilities depend on across government, utility, and critical-infrastructure sites.
Under our NDA obligations, we do not name those clients or their locations. The engineering behind that work carries over to your project, including proper post depth, appropriate material gauge, and anti-climb designs that eliminate the footholds a chain link fence can provide.
Your perimeter is only as strong as its weakest run. That is why we assess the entire line, not just the front gate. Explore our security and commercial fencing insights for more information.
High-Security & Crash-Rated Perimeter Systems
When your site needs to stop a vehicle rather than just a person, the specification changes. Hurricane Fence designs and installs crash-rated barriers to K-rated and M-rated standards, meaning they are certified to stop a vehicle of a given weight at a given speed.
We build to ATFP requirements, the anti-terrorism force protection standards used on defense and federal work, as well as ASTM test methods.
A complete high-security package can combine several elements, including a high-security fence Richmond sites can rely on, anti-climb mesh or ornamental steel on the perimeter, and bollards at vulnerable approach points to block vehicle access to buildings and equipment.
Each component is specified around the threat the site actually faces rather than a one-size-fits-all template.
See our high-security fencing solutions, Richmond high-security fencing, and energy and utility site security pages for more detail.

Commercial Fencing Systems We Install
The right system depends on the site, the required security level, and who needs access. Here is what we build for Triangle businesses, along with the high-security work that sets us apart.

Commercial Chain Link Fence
We install galvanized, vinyl-coated, and security-grade systems for perimeter fencing, storage yards, and equipment areas. See our chain link fence options.

Commercial Aluminum Fence & Ornamental Steel
These work well for parking areas, campus borders, and building frontages where appearance matters. Review our aluminum fence options.

Dumpster & Generator Enclosures
We build these for daily loading and heavy use.

Temporary & Construction Fencing
This provides rapid site security that comes down when the job wraps. See our temporary fencing options
Commercial Fencing Systems We Install
When a site needs more than a physical barrier, we design integrated high-security fencing. Hurricane Fence is Virginia’s only fence company with a dedicated in-house gate operator and access control division, and we bring that capability into North Carolina.

Crash & Vehicle-arresting Systems
For federal, military, and government facilities, we install K-Rated crash systems (K4 through K12) and M-Rated vehicle-arresting systems (M30 through M50), built to ATFP (Anti-Terrorism Force Protection) and ASTM standards.

Automatic Gates and Access Control
We design and install automatic swing and sliding gates with card-reader integration, so your gate and fence work as one system. That means no second contractor and no warranty finger-pointing. Our gate team holds IDEA certification as Automated Gate Systems Designers. Explore our gate installation and automatic gate operators.
Data center, government, and military work is described here in general terms only, in keeping with our client confidentiality agreements.

Commercial Fence Permits and Site Compliance in Raleigh, NC
Permitting in the Triangle is manageable, but requirements differ by jurisdiction. Getting the paperwork right up front helps keep the project on schedule.
Raleigh. A zoning permit is required for every commercial fence in Raleigh, regardless of height. Beyond that, a commercial fence over 6 feet may also require a building permit. The application requires a Non-Residential Permit Application form and a site plan, submitted through the city per the Raleigh fence permit requirements.
- Corner lots and front-yard fences are also reviewed against the Raleigh Street Design Manual for sight-distance clearance.
- Approved plans that are not issued remain active for 6 months, then are voided.
- Raleigh posts standard review times online by permit type, rather than a single fixed figure for commercial fence permits.
Durham. A building permit is required once a commercial fence reaches 6 feet, the same threshold Raleigh uses, per the Durham fence and wall requirements.
- Fences under 6 feet generally do not require a building permit.
- Fences at or above 6 feet require one, and anything taller than the standard 8-foot limit needs a variance from the Durham Board of Adjustment.
- Fences that affect fire department access or serve as a swimming pool barrier require a permit, regardless of height.
Chapel Hill. Exterior work, including fences, is reviewed for compliance with setback, height, and land-disturbance requirements under the Land Use Ordinance. The specific height and setback figures live in the ordinance’s dimensional matrix table rather than on the permit page itself, so for an exact number on a given site, Chapel Hill’s permitting office can be reached directly at 919-968-2718 or permits@townofchapelhill.org, per the Chapel Hill permit requirements.
We prepare the required permit documentation and assist with HOA submittals when a commercial or multi-family site requires them. The customer submits and is responsible for the application, and we maintain OSHA site safety standards on every commercial job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Commercial Fencing FAQ, Richmond, VA
Do I need a permit for a commercial fence in Raleigh, NC?
Yes. Raleigh requires a zoning permit for every fence regardless of height, and a commercial fence over 6 feet may also require a building permit. The application needs a Non-Residential Permit Application form and a site plan. We prepare that documentation for you, though the customer submits the application.
Does the permit process differ in Durham or Chapel Hill?
Yes. Durham’s building-permit threshold is 6 feet, with an 8-foot maximum before a variance is required, and permits are required regardless of height for fences affecting fire access or serving as a pool barrier. Chapel Hill reviews fences under its Land Use Ordinance for setback, height, and land-disturbance compliance, with exact figures set by site. We confirm the current rule for your specific location before we quote.
How much does commercial fencing cost in the Triangle?
Cost depends on linear footage, material and security grade, gate and access-control count, and site terrain. We give an exact number after an in-person site visit.
How long does a commercial fence project take in the Triangle?
Timeline depends on scope, permitting, and site conditions, but the sequence is consistent: in-person site visit, design, permits, the NC811 utility locate, then installation. We can give you a project timeline after the site visit.
Can Hurricane Fence work as a subcontractor with our general contractor?
Yes. We coordinate directly with your GC or project manager, work to your site schedule, and keep a single project contact so updates do not get lost. This is standard on our commercial installations.
What security fencing options do you offer for industrial and high-security sites?
We install high-security perimeter systems including K-Rated crash barriers (K4 through K12), M-Rated vehicle-arresting systems (M30 through M50), and ATFP-compliant designs, paired with automatic gates and access control. Our gate team is IDEA certified.
Does Hurricane Fence handle utility locates and site plans?
Yes. We place the NC811 call, which requires 3 working days of notice, and the marks stay valid for 28 calendar days. We also prepare the site plan required for commercial permit submittals.
