Design Build: The Simple Solution for a Complicated Fence Project

Posted by Michelle Goodwin on Wed, Mar 23, 2016

Design Build project is  when the traditional “bid” step of design-bid-build format is circumvented by entrusting the task a subcontractor to design and build the project. Depending on the circumstances, the cost incurred by hiring an architect or additional engineer is eliminated alongside the middle man.

A professional commercial or industrial fence contractor that has proven experience with design build, will be able to both design and price your enclosure solution based on specifications.

As a side note, smaller more intimate level, almost all residential customers can be considered the "owner" and the subcontractor designs and builds the fence based their needs.

Buyers & Builders

For example, VDOT and military specifications are exceptionally strict.
The fence company involved should have a working knowledge of how the requirements affect the job. Design–build places the responsibility for design errors and omissions on the design–builder, relieving the owner of legal and managerial responsibilities. The burden for these costs and associated risks are transferred to the design–build team.

ASTM specifications play a very large part these types of projects because very rarely is the specification drawn out on the plans. They often require a vast array of specifications that its typically in the best interest of the property construction team to hire a professional.

This simplifies the work of the buyer and streamlines the construction process.

Often, commercial construction managers and the property owner, will collaborate in order to organize the needs of the customer by fielding the information to selected design/build subcontractors.

This is especially true when the fence job must involve several trades to work together. Without the right experience and resources, a new fence company might miss specifications and codes needed for that particular job.

Depending on whether the project is commercial, military, or federal, the requirements can vary greatly and affect cost structure.

Above is Pitt Field at University of Richmond. This projects required several additional designs including windscreen, an upgrade to industrial aluminum fencing and galvanized chain link fence that meets athletic field specs.

Accounting for Accountability

By relieving the buyer or property owner of the building responsibility, an experienced design build team allows greater productivity with fewer costs. It gives the builder teams the ability to install their work using their knowledge and resources. As a result, the quality of work of the project will improve.

While the buyer is still responsible for communicating his or her needs and desires with the project, the builder must be highly competent to understand appropriate requirements and restrictions. By creating the direct connection between the builder and the subcontractors, the buyer is able to focus their efforts on the overall outcome.

Design–build can save time and money for the owner, while allowing a chance to achieve innovation on the project. Design–build allows owners to avoid being placed directly between the architect/engineer and the contractor which under design–bid–build process, the owner takes on more legal risks in that position. The design build process has been used for centuries to increase productivity and reduce cost, but it is only recently making a significant comeback in the construction industry. Design build is becoming more common in the United States and abroad, giving fence companies a larger role in this process.

Cutting Edge Fencing: Surrounding your Property with Barbed Wire

Posted by Michelle Goodwin on Sat, Jun 20, 2015

Barbed Wire & Barbed Tape: A Cutting Edge Partnership in Security Fencing

Without a doubt, the primary use for barbed wire and barbed tape ib the US is for perimeter security. This brief will give you a better understanding of the uses and benefits of this highly effective security fence application. Both barb wire and barb tape are almost always used in precarious commercial environments. Properties where large outdoor machinery automobiles, and large property areas that are out of direct eyesight will ensure that these areas are accounted for. The aggressive appearance of the wire is sometimes thought to detract from the visual appeal and diminish a commercial property's value. In actuality, an area secured with the addition of these tried and true fence materials provide a utilitarian security that affords immeasuable fence cost benefits both short and long term use.

Barb Basics

Barbed wire is a type of fencing wire that has sharp or pointed edges typically around 5 or so inches. It is used as an inexpensive yet effective added security measure for small and large, rural and urban properties alike. Originally for farm fence, it gained urban acclaim in the early 20th Century and expanded to a means of to keep people as well as city critters out of private and restricted areas.

Barbed wire and barb tape were brought into the mainstream farming community by this guy. Glidden refined Henry Rose's original single-stranded barbed wire design and significantly improved upon it by using two strands of wire twisted together to hold the barbed spur wires firmly in place. Glidden’s wire also soon proved to be well suited to mass production techniques, and by 1880 more than 80 million pounds of inexpensive Glidden-style barbed wire was sold, making it the most popular wire in the nation.

A person or animal trying to pass through or over a fence will surely have discomfort and obtain possible serious injury from sharp barbs. A qualified and highly skilled fence company can construct or add these commercial fence features quickly and easily. Don't be mislead by the quick turnaround of this sort of fence installation.

Fence pros have taken the required OSHA safety courses to know how this precarious security fence application should be handled and installed. Some projects may require, five, six and even seven strands of wire may be used to maximize fence height and minimize spacing between wood farm fence installations. The wire is aligned under tension between braced heavy fence posts. The addition of barb wire is widely used in the military security, state and federal prisons, detention houses, data centers, government buildings and other national security facilities.

One of the biggest commercial uses for fence particularly barbed wire in Virginia is for enclosed farm fencing where animals are often transported, bought or sold.Ask a fence contractor and they'll concur that more often than not, a well-built yet minimally maintained 3 of 4 wirewire fence will suffice in most instances.

Applications

12 ½ gauge is an industrial gauge that meets military specifications. 15 ½ gauge barb wire is typically used for light commercial grade and temporary fencing. One of the benefits to 15 ½ gauge is that the barbs are sharper. Barb wire comes in galvanized and vinyl coated steel. Vinyl coated  barb can come in green or black and the actual barbs are not coated. Barbwire is made of low carbon steel wire or galvanized wire with the twisting processing by the barbed wire machines.Materials: low carbon steel wire, PVC coated wire, zinc coated wire, iron wire.

Barb Wire Uses

-Land fencing and protection
-Animal cage
-Neighborhood and Business security fencing aid.

-fencing with chain link fence or welded wire mesh fence.

  • Features:  No stretching required when installing
  • Barbs fixed between wires
  • Adaptable for all fencing needs.
  • Uniformly zinc coated

Typically, a new roll of barbed wire is 80 rods [1,320 feet (ft.)] in length and consists of double strand galvanized wire with barbs attached  at intervals of about 4 inches.

A lower grade barb wire can be used to prevent animals on farms and refuges, but chain link with 3 to 6 strands on top is used for commercial or military grade fence.Barbwire fencing, hurricane fence, richmond barb wire fence, rva fence, barb wire fencing richmond

Ornamental Aluminum Fence is Wrought with New Options

Posted by Michelle Goodwin on Mon, Jun 08, 2015

Since its inception, Ornamental Aluminum fence have made a nice name for itself among homeowners and small business owners. Aluminum's versatile and pleasing profile has helped it to  become the chameleon of modern fencing.  For consumers who prefer a good blend of modernity and classical aesthetics, Ornamenal Aluminum fencing and gates come in a wide variety of options and several colors.

That's great for fences in Virginia as it has the ability to work extensively on both small and large landscapes.

pool-fences.jpg SlateHaven-Southington

Until recently, there have been no options for these who really want that wrought iron look but haven't beenable to justify the labor, time or cost--consider the problem solved.PC Aluminum is an alternative fence application that uses a spray eco-friendly composite spray instead of wet aluminum paint. It's a dry powder is sprayed onto the fence, and static electricity keeps the powder on the enclosure long enough to get it to an oven. While in the heat it melts the plastic to cover the materials, and when the part cools the coating covers the aluminum as if it had been wet painted. The elements of the melted aluminum compote also delivers a unique solution that's twice the thickness and hardness of a typical baked enamel finish.

Even the best quality (Class 1 Architectural) anodizing is only required to be .0007" thick; whereas paint or powder is generally 3x as thick. The result is an aluminum fence that is just as strong as a traditional steel enclosure. It looks and feels like cast or wrought iron. Best of all the cost of installation will be lower to install and substantially lighter on your wallet.

What about pool fences? Is it waterproof?
Yes, the new coating is not a paint in the traditional sense. While paint can flake, the poder coating will create a multiple textures and layyers that make watter hard to damage. So, splash away!. It also looks fantastic on a range of pool fence installations. The below links will give you a visual for  new aluminum fence options.

It's Not Just What's on The Outside That Counts.
Think of the interior of your new aluminum fence as a small army of reinforced ribs acting as a retaining wall that supports your fence coating. Then, take a look at some of the many products that use this technolgy. Don't worry, links are here to help.

What is the difference in terms of durability, scratch resistance, fade resistance, etc.?

Select local fence contractors may offer fence that has the new powder coat finish while others use the standard with a baked enamel finish. The durability and corrosion resistance of an organic finish (paint, powder coating, enamel, etc.) depends as much or more on the pre treatment (zinc plating, iron phosphate, zinc phosphate, sandblast, solvent wipe) than on the finish coat. Furthermore, there are many different resins (polyester, epoxy, etc.) The result of this is that, a consumer really can't predict the durability of a finish; all you can go by is the reputation of the supplier.

If this breakthrough alternative application is exclusive and new, how can I be sure I'm getting what I expect?

Have no fear, the AMMA is here to protect you against fraudulent or poorly made materials on fencing of any kind. AAMA standards are developed and in place in response to the needs of contracting companies to solve critical issues in the industry. They serve are companies of all sizes. AAMA is recognized around the world for the development of standards that provide third-party validation of product performance and quality. You can read more about the AAMA here

If you need to find an exclusive local fence contractor that has access to this new fence option for your home or business, this link to Sonco Fence Worldwide or this Residential Brochure can fill you in on what you, your local fencing company and pocket book need to know.

While damage to commercial fence is usually caused by vehicles hitting the fence and gates,
or by vandals cutting fence to gain access to business properties to steal from company vehicles or steal stored company materials.

No matter how you slice it, the homeowner or business owner, depending on the amount of damage, can engage insurance companies to check on policy coverage and deductibles.

HOW DO INSURANCE ESTIMATES ON DAMAGED FENCES WORK?

Fence damage is common in residential and commercial properties. Damage to residential fence is most often caused by fallen trees, wind, or bad storms.

Residential property fence damage will require the homeowner to call their insurance company and discuss damage to the fence and decide if the insurance claim is valid depending on the amount of damage and the cost of repair.

Another variable will be the deductible on the insurance policy that the homeowner has with the insurance company. In some cases the insurance company will call three fence companies for the homeowner, and request estimates.

The professional fence contractor will go to the property to price fence repairs, and send the quote directly to the insurance company to handle all aspects of the repair.

In either case, it is up to the homeowner to decide if they prefer to involve the insurance company for the fence fix or if they wish to pay out of pocket.

If the damage to the fence is minimal, the homeowner should probably not involve the insurance company. This is becuse the deductible may not be met depending on the amount of fence damage.
A phone call to the insurance agent or checking the insurance policy will give the homeowner the amount of the deductible to decide if an insurance claim is valid.

DAMAGE BY VANDALS

Commercial property fence damage due to vandals usually will not require a call to the insurance company for repair cost.  These claims are usually so small that it would not meet their deductible.

The only reason why an insurance company would be called due to vandalism to a fence would be because other property on the site has been stolen or damaged, and the fence repair can be added to the total insurance claim.

The business would be required to call their insurance company and report damage and ask for an agent to visit the property to record damage. After the insurance agent has recorded the fence damage, the fence company would be called to price fence repairs and turn in quotes to the insurance company for review. The insurance company and the fence contractor usually handle the repair and cost.

If no one witnesses the incident and no one claims responsibility for the damage, the business owner will have to call his or her insurance company to make a claim. Typically, the procedure to have insurance companies pay for damages would be the same as in residential fence damage claims.
