Proactive Projects: The Perks of Winter Fence Installation

Posted by Michelle Goodwin on Sat, Dec 10, 2016

This time of year, visions of butterflies and backyard barbecues are overshadowed by ones of sugar plums and mistletoe. However, having your fence installed in the fall & winter months has some crucial advantages you should consider.

Along with the latest toys and technologies, a new fence is a perfectly reasonable and highly impactful gift to add to the top of your Holiday Wish List. Indeed, September-March is the best time to build your new fence.

Overlooked, but probably not a surprise that conscious consumers make big purchases for their homes in the off season. The fact is that most homeowners are not concentrating on outdoor projects until the spring thaw.

Preparing your home and business for annual winter weather should be a priority. Before you head out into the wild winter wilderness, here's some insight into scheduling and installing a fence in early winter so that you can check those projects off your list, twice.

TIME & LABOR

It’s simple supply and demand. Homeowners who do their homework want the best service, and they want it at a reduced cost with little to no overtime. Being aware that in the off season; you are likely to pay less for your residential fence installation and get the most attention from your contractor.

Professional fence contractors tend to fill up very quickly with new and repeat Residential Commercial & Industrial customers during the spring and summer.

Peak season fence installations can have longer turnaround times.  Other anticipated spring projects could end up on the back burner waiting for installation from a busy contractor.

Keep in mind that there are two winter situations where fence installation on is not recommended.

  • Rainy days: Digging in the mud is never easy, and the holes tend to fill with water. Even if you do manage to get the fence up, chances are it will not be straight.

  • Lots of snow: Snow causes issues with the string line as well as the barrier edges.

A huge perk of this strategy is that when you start your fence installation in the off-season months, you will get to work in close collaboration with your Professional Fence Specialist. If you have specialty materials or regulated job specifications, a fence company can help you line that up.

Off Season is perfect timing to replace a dilapidated or damaged fence. Maybe you are ready to replace an old fence on your property that is not up to code.

Alternatively, if you are tired of staining and maintaining an old wood fence, you may want to consider a low maintenance option like vinyl or Ornamental Aluminum.

These two options need very little attention after installation. Replacing your wood fence with these options will allow you to see firsthand how these weather resistant materials stand up to the colder months.

WILL END OF YEAR FENCE INSTALLATION BENEFIT NEXT YEAR'S HOUSE PROJECTS?

It is a good idea to consider pool installation in winter months as those prices are also generally lower. Having the pool and fence ready to go by the time the flowers start blooming will be worth its weight in winter weather. Be proactive and schedule your pool and fence jobs in unison.

If you are in contact with your pool company for a winter installation, a Professional Fence Specialist should be able to work with your preferred contractor. Both construction companies should work in sync to achieve your individual project goals.

A Professional Fence Company should even be able to provide temporary fencing for the duration of the construction process. They can help streamline your project for your future Residential Fence Installation.

RECALL THE MOST FAMOUS REASON OF ALL

There’s nothing quite like that first enchanting blanket of snow, timeless holiday lighting and cool holiday decor Christmas draped across your fence. Your neighbors and family will be in awe at the sight of your very own winter wonderland. Moreover, while your neighbors are planning and constructing and spending, you’ll be the one chilling.

Vinyl Fencing 101: A Record of Resillience

Posted by Michelle Goodwin on Sat, Aug 22, 2015
Vinyl fences are some of the most durable, long lasting, and best looking fences available to homeowners today.
It's easy to see why vinyl fences are quickly becoming a favorite fencing material for homeowners across the country.

Set it and Forget it

Perhaps the biggest perk of vinyl/pvc fencing materials is that vinyl maintenance free fencing. Except for the first installation, you'll rarely ever have to pay service call charges for fencing expenses.  Vinyl fencing never needs touching up, treating, painting, or even regular cleaning. And since most vinyl fencing sold today comes with a lifetime warranty, you can rest assured that it's the last fence you're ever going to have to buy.

Tough As Nails

Besides being maintenance free, vinyl fences are also one of the most weather resistant fencing solutions to date. They are up to five times stronger than wood, and four times as flexible. That means they're virtually indestructible, whether they're taking a beating from unruly livestock or a pack of middle school kids. Since they are made of a solid vinyl material that is the same color through and through, scratches, nicks, and other blemishes won't show, or need to be touched up, like some other fencing applications.

Refined by Design

As the vinyl fence industry has grown, so have the uses for this durable fence material. What started out as an alternative to split rail agricultural fencing has now become a viable alternative for farmers, ranchers, and homeowners alike. Vinyl fencing is available in picketwrought iron styleprivacy, and pool fencing, just to name a few of the more popular styles. In fact, if you're interested in purchasing vinyl fencing for your home, you're virtually guaranteed to find a fence design out there that fits the bill.

A Buy to Rely On.

Not all vinyl fences are created equal, so it's important that you know what to shop for before you make any major purchases. The rule of thumb is the thicker the vinyl, the stronger the vinyl. A quality, thick vinyl is nearly indestructible, while thin vinyl may be more succeptable to external factors. Make absolutely sure the fence you're purchasing contains titanium dioxide to prevent UV deterioration. The two biggest enemies of vinyl fencing are sun and cold temperatures. Both cease to be an issue, however, if the fence is manufactured with titanium dioxide.  And if it has been treated with impact modifiers to increase the vinyl's strength.

If you're interested in having a vinyl fence installed on your property, talk to a professional accredited local fencing contractor or fence material supplier experienced in working with vinyl/pvc to ensure that your vinyl fence project doesn't skip a beat!

Commercial Fences: What is the Best Type to Use for My Business

Posted by Kristen Fugere on Thu, Aug 21, 2014

For business owners, choosing the best commercial fence solution can be a daunting task.

There are an abundant array of options available on the fence market. These options are comprised of three major types of pereimeter structures: chain link, wood, and ornamental fence solutions.
Picking out the best style of fence for you and your business hinges on two deciding factors: the sort of business you own and its location. Each type weighs in with its own fence material benefits.

Chain Link Fences: A general contractor whose business is located in an industrial park would most likely use chain-link fencing in order to safeguard their on-site assets. When using chainlink for security purposes, it is best to strive for a height of 6’ or 6 feet of greater and a thickness of at least 9-gauge in order to reap the benefits from this cost effective fencing.

A good general practice is to avoid solid barriers when erecting
security fencesThis will eliminate visual blockades where trespassers could potentially hide.

Ornamental Fence:  For the business owner who runs their operation in areas where fence appearance must be considered, such as in historic Richmond or Williamsburg Virginia, the use of a sturdy ornamental iron fence would be ideal. Attractive security is the predominate objective for many business installations.

While all ornamental fence facades should be at least 6’ high, there are varied fence rail configurations that can be selected. Pickett fence tops can also be added to prevent ease of access to a fence secured area, and increase the aesthetic appeal of the installation.

These fence can be comprised of three primary types of ornamental fencing:

Welded Steel Fence:  Black (non-galvanized) steel components are welded together to form a section that is them primed and painted. During installation, the sections are welded directly to the posts at the jobsite. Depending on climate, welded systems can begin to show rust with the first year after being installed and must be wire brushed and repainted periodically. If welded steel panels are added it is highly recommended to add a polyester powder coated finish of the galvanized steel.

Assembled Component Fencing:  Galvanized steel fence components (using a minimum G-60 zinc coating) are machine punched, and then given a polyester powder-coat finish.
After coating, the components are assembled into sections using drive rivets or retaining rods. Assembled sections are attached to posts using brackets so the coating isn't compromised, which minimizes potential red rust problems.

Aluminum Ornamental Fencing: Manufactured similarly to steel assembled components, these special aluminum-alloy fences are powder coated, and then joined into sections using screws or pop rivets. These sections attach through brackets or holes punched in the posts. Aluminum ornamental fencing should be considered for harsh coastal environments or when corrosive chemicals are nearby.

Privacy Wood FenceA business run in a residential area may select the wood or stick built privacy fence for security. Commerce areas that are adjacent to residential zones often use them as well. Wood privacy fences are also great selections for dumpster enclosures.

Choosing between Vinyl (PVC) and Aluminum Fence: How do they compare?

Posted by Michelle Goodwin on Wed, Mar 05, 2014

Vinyl Fence vs. Aluminum Fence

Deciding between vinyl (PVC) and Ornamental Aluminum Fence can be a bit daunting for the consumer. There are a couple factors you many want to take into consideration before making a well informed decision about how you choose to enclose your outdoor space. These fencing aspects are: privacy, security, maintenance, gate configuration, fence cost, and color selection.

Privacy:

When it comes to privacy, vinyl pulls ahead. With fence heights reaching up to 6’ or 8’ and its solid state, vinyl is perfect for back yards, pool enclosures, perimeter fencing, and dumpster or mechanical enclosures. Aluminum can only offer similar privacy if fill-in panels are added. However, these panels take away from the traditional ornamental look of the fence.

Security:

Ornamental aluminum definitely takes the lead when it comes to security. Due to its limitations, vinyl fence cannot meet the material conditions for large gate uses. It simply cannot be made as security conscious as it aluminum counterpart. When looking to improve security of an office building, and apartment complexes, commercial and industrial grade aluminum fence is always the best choice. Heavy duty and decorative gates can easily be equipped with automated electric operators and access controls for additional security measures and ease of operation.  Residential grade aluminum fences are somewhat less secure, but are still an ideal solution for keeping children and pets in or out of the back yard.

Maintenance:

Requiring little to no maintenance vinyl has a slight edge over aluminum. Though ornamental fence is also low maintenance, a simple occasional wash with soap and water is all it takes to keep this vinyl as beautiful as the day it was installed.

Gate configuration:

fence workshop

For many buyers larger gates are a must have. With ornamental aluminum, these demanding sizes can be met. Aluminum gate sizes vary from 3’ wide walk gates to 30’ wide slide gates. Features such as self-closing hinges, pool latches, magnetic latches, and gate operators and access controls for larger fences all work wonderfully with aluminum fence. Aluminum gates also work to meet standardized pool codes. Vinyl Gates are only manufactured in sizes from 3’ wide single panel swing gates to 12’ or 16’ wide double panel swing gates.  Large gates are usually constructed with pipe posts and frames, to which the vinyl fence panels are then attached. Vinyl products are rarely used in automated systems.

Cost:

The cost of installation for either material is about the same, relative to size. Naturally, the price goes up as the size of the fence increases. Large ornamental aluminum gates will cost more than smaller sized vinyl ones.

Color Selection:

Ornamental Aluminum fences are available in a variety of styles, sizes and grades for almost any fence requirement.  The standard powder coating colors - green, brown, white, and black give years of attractive protection. Ornamental color variations are currently being increased but specific suppliers do produce custom colors. Although most vinyl fences are white, many manufacturers now offer several color selections as well as wood grain and textured surfaces.

Once these aspects have been taken into consideration, an experienced professional fence specialist should be able to provide customer service and expertise in getting a fence that fits your unique specifications, whether it be vinyl or aluminum.

Mehmet Ali Gökçeoğlu, a successful businessman and topographical engineer from Turkey, recently built the “world’s most fantastic” fence for his luxurious villa in Çeşme, Izmir. Eight years ago he replaced the wrought iron metal fence at the front of his property with a specialty 50-meter-long aquarium filled “fence” structure with hundreds of fish and octopuses. Above are the pictures to prove it.

Located just a few feet away from the shores of the Aegean Sea, Mehmet Ali Gökçeoğlu’s property has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Çeşme, attracting up to a thousand visitors a day, according to its owner. The villa itself is pretty impressive, but it’s not what draws so many people to this place. They come to see the aqua-fence. Eight years ago, the Turkish businessman had the eccentric idea to replace the front fence of his home with a giant aquarium full of various marine creatures from the Aegean Sea. Building the transparent structure was actually the easy part of the project. The hard part was linking the aqua-fence to the Aegean through a 400-meter-long buried pipeline, so the water could be changed continuously to keep the aquarium looking clean and its inhabitants happy. Gökçeoğlu hired a team of private divers to perform the task, and ended up paying approximately 40,000 Turkish Lira ($21,000) to fulfill his dream. The businessman says just seeing people line up outside his house staring at his specialty fence creation makes it all worth it.
