Typically, a new roll of barbed wire is 80 rods [1,320 feet (ft.)] in length and consists of double strand galvanized wire with barbs attached  at intervals of about 4 inches. A lower grade barb wire can be used to prevent animals on farms and refuges, but chain link with 3 to 6 strands on top is used for commercial or military grade fence.

Generally accepted razor lengths:

• short razor wire has barbs from 10 mm to 15 mm long
• medium razor wire has barbs 20 mm to 25 mm long
• long razor wire has barbs from 60 to 66 mm long.
• Razor wire is much sharper than the barbs of barbed wire. The sharp edges of the wire can seriously injure any person attempting to pass through.
